Solar Winds Energy Inc. – Daniel Moody

Energy is all around us. We use energy for heating, cooling, lighting and electricity every day and put it to use in many different settings in which we live, work and play. Capturing solar energy from the sun and wind energy provides access to a ready supply of power that is sustainable, affordable and has less impact on our environment.

SW Energy Inc. founded in 1998 and incorporated in 2000 is a Newfoundland based company that serves all Atlantic Canada. SW Energy has worked on many successful projects from commercial, industrial, residential, mobile, and marine applications, utilizing a variety of renewable and energy efficient products and solutions for off grid (remote) and grid connected energy systems. It is the success of these projects that have provided SW Energy with a local and national reputation in the field of renewable and efficient energy.

The Founder and President of SW Energy Inc., is Dan Moody. Dan had worked in the electrical industrial field in many capacities including field electrical technicians, supervisor, engineering advisor and maintenance planner. Large Business of the Year

The Large Business of the Year award recognizes a member of the Clarenville Area Chamber of Commerce with 10 or more employees that has demonstrated a continued passion for excellence and promoted the advancement of responsible business leadership within our region. The criteria are identical to Small Business of the Year.

Nominees:
  • ·      Clarenville Area Consumers Co-operative Society Ltd.
  • ·      Don Cherry’s Sports Grill
  • ·      Meridian Engineering Inc.
  •

  • Nominees:

Clarenville Area Consumers Co-operative Society Ltd.

On June 26, 1968 the Clarenville Area Consumers Co-operative Society Ltd. opened its doors. With a membership of 180, a manager, and a staff of four, it commenced operations in a rented building.
After about a year in the rented building, it was found that business increased to such an extent that a larger store became necessary. Plans were made to construct the Co-op’s own building in what is now known as the Clarenville Shopping Centre. On December 17, 1970, the new 8960 sq. ft. and first member-owned store was officially opened for business.
In 2007 the Co-op partnered with the Lions Club with 50/50 draw which takes place each week.
The Clarenville Area Co-op now has a membership of over 8000 and a staff ranging from 60 to 90.
Membership of the Co-op is made up of people from Clarenville and surrounding areas, as far away as Charlottetown, Bonavista and Chance Cove. As a member owned store the profits are returned to the members and the community.
In the last year the Co-op opened a brand new Gas Bar with Car Wash and a Robin’s franchise in both the store and gas bar. The Co-op has started a pilot project – home delivery of groceries for seniors within the Clarenville area. Robin’s Donuts has free delivery for Schools and Business’s within the Clarenville Area.

Don Cherry’s Sports Grill

Don Cherry's Sports Grill has been serving the greater Clarenville region now for about 10 years. Its first incarnation resided at the sportsplex (Now The WAVE), then moving into St Jude Hotel. It became its own stand-alone structure in July of 2005.

Don Cherry's is officially known as a sports bar, but it is also a family restaurant. DC’s have been sponsoring kids’ hockey, volleyball and basketball tournaments for years, as friendly competition is instrumental in forming well rounded individuals. DC’s also has been known to sponsor an individual player to help with equipment and travel costs incurred through the year.

DC’s sponsor teams sometimes by purchasing uniforms/Jerseys for competitions. Don Cherry's has also been a major sponsor of the 2009/2010 Herder Champion Clarenville Caribous since their return to action.

Owners Carolyn and John Frampton, as well as Chef/Manager Terry Vere-Holloway, and staff are committed to giving customers a great experience from the time they enter the doors until the time they leave. They strive to provide the community the best food and service possible, as it's the community that has made us successful. They are the restaurant’s bosses.

Meridian Engineering Inc.

Meridian Engineering Inc., incorporated in June, 2011.  At that time they had a staff of 12.  Since then the firm has grown with a current staff complement of 14, and with plans of further growth – they are presently recruiting two additional persons, an engineer and a technologist. (A staff of 16 would represent a 33% growth since 2011)

While 14 persons or (16 persons) would not represent a large staff relative to some other local companies, these professional positions represent significant payroll that would be approximately equivalent to the payroll of 50 typical retail positions.

Meridian Engineering Inc. are fortunate to have many long standing traditional clients that they have been serving since the days of their original predecessor company, Davis Engineering, over 25 years ago. They are also very busy these days with the Hebron project, both with the Topsides and GBS. In fact, they have three staff seconded to the project for all of 2013 while they also continue to support the project design needs from our office here in Clarenville.

Steve Chaytor, the company’s President, tells me that it is satisfying to be a partner in a company that is 100% owned by Newfoundland engineers who work there every day and return to their homes in Clarenville each evening. In a relatively small town like Clarenville, you truly feel that the success within your own company extends beyond the owners and staff and it makes a meaningful contribution to the economic prosperity of the community as a whole.

Winner: Stephen Chaytor - Meridian Engineering

Jill Monk – Kraft Celebration Tour

The Kraft Celebration Tour initiative came about from a conversation Jill had with a friend regarding funding opportunities.  This sparked Jill’s interest in terms of wondering if this was something realistic that could be done and her initial thoughts targeted Elizabeth Swan Park.
Jill (Russell) Monk grew up using the park in Clarenville and today, with her own family continues to use the facility. After reviewing the entire process she believed this goal was achievable!
Thus, Jill took some pictures of the park and wrote a letter of submission during the 1st Week of June. From there she became extremely busy gathering up on-line support for the submission. She asked all her email contacts, family, friends, staff, and students to support the project and in turn they all did the same. The park is so instrumental to so many community uses/events that everyone just seemed to want to help in the cause!  When nominations closed on June 10th, Jill’s Elizabeth Swan Park Submission had over 1000 people supporting it!
The top 20 submissions were decided by criteria and judging completed by Kraft. On July 1st the official announcement was made on TSN Sports Centre - Clarenville had made it!
Clarenville would face off with Canning Nova Scotia in a head to head online voting competition for the $25 000.00 grant and the opportunity to host TSN Sports Centre live. Within ten minutes of the announcement, Jill received a call on her cell while she and her family were camping at Lakeside - A camera crew from TSN was in Clarenville and wanted to tape footage within the next hour…and the whirl wind started from there!
They had 10 days to prepare for the voting event. During that time there was much to be done…Jill invited a group of friends/ acquaintances with specific skill sets to form a committee to promote the competition. They partnered with the Town of Clarenville and Clarenville Area Athletic Association to promote and organize the various stages of the event.
After they were declared winners a number of things also had to be arranged for the August 18th Show. The Town of Clarenville would be having officials from Kraft & TSN visit their community to do a live broadcast – the broadcast showcased Elizabeth Swan, the Park that bears her name and the Town .

Jill has indicated that the entire event was worth all the work and volunteer hours. It was a reaffirmation of her faith in our community to come together to achieve greatness!! It proved that anything is possible when you have a committed group of people working together to achieve a common goal. She was fortunate to work with a fantastic team of talented volunteers. The experience was definitely rich in community building and for two months Clarenville was promoted on National Television. Jill is also very pleased that this contest also fostered an extremely valuable educational piece – The story of Elizabeth Swan – giving a more personal connection to the naming of the park. The $25 000.00 prize and the community support has been a catalyst in driving the Elizabeth Swan Park Project as presently there is a $600 000.00 commitment from the Town, Provincial Government, and ACOA combined to build a new Chalet as part of the first phase of revitalizing the park.
Jill’s other Community Involvement is:
<!--[if !supportLists]-->-         <!--[endif]-->Secretary with the Clarenville Area Recreation Association
<!--[if !supportLists]-->·       <!--[endif]-->Presented with the President’s Award
<!--[if !supportLists]-->-         <!--[endif]-->Executive Member – Director of Clarenville Area Soccer Association
<!--[if !supportLists]-->-         <!--[endif]-->Vice-Chair of Clarenville Minor Softball

They are an organization that is governed by a Volunteer Board of Directors and their shelter doors are open 365 days per year to house homeless, stray animals that have nowhere else to turn. They assist approximately 500 animals per year in the Clarenville shelter and they make every reasonable attempt to find forever homes for the animals in their care. The SPCA has fostered good working relationships with other shelters, rescue groups and the local business community. Through these relationships they have worked tirelessly to save as many animals as they can. Their annual operating costs are approximately $130,000 per year to keep the animal shelter in operation and provide the necessary medical attention for the animals in their care.
With help from various businesses and other community groups, they have been able to continue to grow this wonderful organization to be one of the most successful on the island. Assistance has come in the way of support from organizations such as the Clarenville Lions Club and the Clarenville Co-op 50/50 Committee who helped with their vehicle purchase to be used to transfer animals. Previously, volunteers would have to use their own personal vehicles for animal transport. Some of the local businesses that support the Clarenville Area SPCA are: Mercer’s Marine, St. Jude Hotel, Tim Horton’s, Wal-Mart, Medical Records Department of the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Castle Building Supplies, Eagle Photo, Craig’s Locksmithing & Autoglass, & Sobey's, In the community, the SPCA is quite active with groups ranging from schools to town councils and many other organizations. Deidra Strowbridge & Enactus

College of the North Atlantic, Clarenville Campus is one of 17 provincial campuses in the College network. For almost 50 years, Clarenville campus has been played a vital role in skills development and in economic development in this region. Graduates of this campus can be found working in industry and in business almost everywhere, and several have gone on to become successful entrepreneurs.
Enactus Clarenville is a student organization. It is part of an international non-profit organization that works with leaders in business and higher education to mobilize university and college students to make a difference in their communities while developing the skills to become socially responsible business leaders. Participating students form teams on their campus and apply business concepts to develop outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.
Enactus is a bridge between the academic College and the real world. Students learn business theory in the classroom but the business world of our community is the teachers of real world business experience. Through partnering with local business, our students have taken on significant projects that have led to significant mutual benefit for both business and students.
Although the success of Enactus Clarenville is credited to many people, it’s primary driving force here at Clarenville Campus has been, and continues to be, its lead instructor; Deidra Strowbridge (Dee). Dee has shepherded the chapter and has played an absolutely critical role in its success. She has been a mentor, a creator, a manager and a shoulder to lean on for the many students who have benefited immensely from her commitment.
This past few years, Enactus students have had the opportunity to partner with many organizations & businesses in our region including White Hills where the team delivered Social Media training/consulting to develop the Resort’s customer base; The Town where the team worked to increase Winter tourism through a social media campaign “All White Here”; The CBDC where the team is currently doing training for small business in computerized accounting; and with the Food Bank, where the team helped raise over 10,000lbs of food.
On top of these innovative initiatives, Enactus Clarenville competes against other teams from across the country every year at Regional and National Competitions. At these competitions their team has an opportunity to showcase their projects and the project partners to judges and teams from across the country and in some cases, around the world.
Key Project Goals:
1) To provide post-secondary students an opportunity to develop leadership and group management skills, gain curriculum development experience and refine their ability to think on their feet and problem solve in the moment.
2) To provide opportunities for students to be involved in a cutting-edge approach to learning:
a. To make decisions on price, marketing, capital investment and research and development in a simulation environment.
b. Learn key business concepts and then apply these in an Internet-based simulation.
3) To encourage a love of learning now and for life through hands on learning activities and by modelling a passion for learning.
4) To help youth, take pride in our community and region
5) To provide an inclusive environment where youth can develop the life skills that support their interests and talents.
Through these project’s, Enactus Clarenville, under Deidra’s leadership, is providing a new generation of entrepreneurs a unique experience that will inspire new and innovative ideas in the business environment. The team’s continued work with Chamber’s Members, clearly exemplifies outstanding Community Service to the people of Clarenville and Surrounding Area – its young people providing a clear example of what we can be and where we can go.

Clarenville Lions Club

Lions Clubs International is an International Organization with 1.36 million members in 207 countries and geographical areas. Since 1925, when Helen Keller challenged Lions to become ‘knights of the blind’, the main focus has been sight. Clarenville Lions collect used eyeglasses each year. These are refurbished, tested and taken to third world countries by teams of Lions and a volunteer ophthalmologist who distribute them to needy people. The International Organization has a Foundation that assists with humanitarian needs worldwide. This foundation is unique in that every dollar donated is used for humanitarian purposes. There is nothing taken out for administration. Nfld has been successful in obtaining funds from this foundation. The Lions Eye Clinic at the Health Science Center was made possible by a grant from LCIF along with money donated by Lions Clubs in the province. Lions still support this clinic financially with an annual Journey for Sight and Diabetes Cavalcade. About two weeks ago over $9600 was donated to the Health Science Eye Clinic. Every second year the Lions Eye Clinic at our local hospital is the recipient of some of this money. The most recent grant was when Igor struck our area. The Dr G B Cross Memorial Hospital has received two grants, both of which were applied for by the Clarenville Lions Club, one for the Lions Optometry Department and one for the CT scan promotion.
Nationally, the Lion’s Club operates a Guide Dog School in Oakville, Ont. There dogs are trained to assist the hearing impaired, sight impaired, children with autism, and any other special needs, e.g. those confined to a wheelchair. Anyone who required such a dog is brought to Oakville, partnered and trained with the dog and returned to live a more independent life at no cost to them.
Provincially, they own and operate a facility on the Bay D’Espair Highway that is equipped to handle people with disabilities. Each year the Clarenville Lions Club helps sponsor a CNIB camp, a type 1 Diabetes camp, an autism camp and 2 -4 open camps for people of any age with a disability.
Locally, Lions have made an impact on the town of Clarenville. They have:
- Donated over $400,000 to the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital since the hospital opened, supplied the Score Clock for the Events Center, placed benches around town for the public’s convenience, equipped a Kitchen at the Dr A O’Mahoney Retirement Center for family gatherings, given 2 Scholarships to the High School annually, bought eyeglasses for needy children, supported local individuals with health problems, supported the Food Bank and the Happy Tree, sponsored a Santa Claus Parade each year since 1964, supported Crime Prevention, and made donations to: Garden of Hope, Janeway Hospital, Children’ Wish Foundation, Relay for life, Easter Seals, Parkinsons, Epilepsy, CNIB, Kidney Association, Diabetes Association.
Their biggest partnership is with the Clarenville Area Co-op in the 50/50 Lottery which The Lion’s Club administers. We are in a Very Different Spot - Finance Minister Wiseman on Budget 2015

Finance Minister Wiseman summed up the Province's 2015 Budget reality succinctly: “We are in a very different spot”.  In a period in which oil is less than half the value than it was a year earlier, “different spot” is may be a bit of an understatement.  Things have changed a lot in a year and the minister and the government is facing some serious challenges.  Minister Wiseman talk to the Clarenville Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening focused exclusively on how and why the government is planning to deal with the downturn – while trying to have a minimal impact on the economy.   In his address he covered the following topics – each of which spoke to the basic principles government has looked at in its crafting the budget: ·                   A Culture of Cost Management     A Refocus our Health System           A Refocus of the College of the North Atlantic           A Focus on long range planning for infrastructure with 5 year planning           A Readjustment

The Bare Mountain Centennial Star - College Community Involvement

Bare Mountain is one of the prominent features of the Clarenville's skyline. It towers some 156 meters above Clarenville’s harbour .  You can reach the peak of Bare Mountain relatively easily along the Bare Mountain hiking trail that can be accessed at numerous points in the town.  At the top, you can overlook most of the town, Random Island and Smith Sound as it leads into Trinity Bay.   Beyond Clarenville residents, people are familiar with Bare Mountain because of the prominence of the large star that sits at its top.   Each Christmas season the star is lit - making it visible from the Highway many kilometers beyond Clarenville's boundaries.   The Bare Mountain Star was a 1967 Centennial project of the Town of Clarenville. The original Centennial Star was designed, welded, wired and assembled by students and faculty in drafting, carpentry, electrical, welding and pipefitting programs at Clarenville campus.  They even helped the Town erect the structure.
