The Two Sides of the Bare Mountain Trail

Bare Mountain towers between upper and lower Clarenville and is the site of the Town's famous lighted star. From the Shoal Harbour Causeway Stairway, a 2.5 km trail brings you to the top of the mountain.    Alternatively, from Manitoba Drive (Manitoba Professional Building), a 3km trail loop can take you to the top of the mountain and back. The Burgoyne's Cove RB36 Crash Site Near Clarenville, NL

In March of 1953, a giant RB36 Peacemaker crashed in the hills above Burgoynes Cove killing 23 airmen. The crash site is accessible by a 1 km trail. How the Plane Got Here... In the early 1950s, the USSR and the nuclear threat that it posed were top of mind in the western world.  There were fears of a nuclear attack on North America in general and the United States in particular.   The US countered this threat with the development and production of many elaborate weapons systems.  The Convair B-36 Peacemaker was B-36 become a mainstay of the American nuclear deterrent.  A technological marvel of its day, this plane could fly 16000 km -  from North America to the USSR, drop its nuclear payload and return without refuelling. A Reconnaissance version of the plane the RB36 swapped cameras for bombs to conduct high altitude very long-range reconnaissance missions. The plane was huge by any standard, It had the longest wingspan of any combat aircraft ever built, ...

The William Epps Cormack Trans-island Trek Bicentennial Event

In September of 1822, Willam Epps Cormack and Joesph Selvester (Selvester Joe) set out on an expedition to cross the then unexplored interior of the Island of Newfoundland. They left from the head of Trinity Bay and for several weeks they made their way through some very difficult wilderness. On 2 November, having spent close to two months crossing the island, Cormack and Sylvester arrived in Flat Bay and two days later crossed over to the European settlement of St. George’s Harbour. This video is a record of the bicentennial commemoration event organized by the Town of George's Brook-Milton on September 5, 2022.
