Public Spaces in Clarenville

When you think of public spaces in Clarenville, what do you think of?

Elizabeth Swan Park? Perhaps. Kids and their parents might gather because of the playground. But usually the gathering is because there's something happening--Winter Carnival event, Clarenville Day, Arts Under the Stars.

Where do people in the town go to hang out, meet up with people, feel good about their community? Some of you are thinking Tim Horton's!

The Shoal Harbour Trail is the beginning of what could be a nice public space. Many people enjoy the walk around the harbour but there's not really a gathering place per se.

White Hills plays a bit of that role. Many people hang out at the lift line! Or meet in many of the cross-country chalets or the downhill chalet. There's a sense of community there.

The creation of public places is an important topic to consider in community planning. Communities thrive because neighbourhoods thrive. Because people know and care about each other. Does the town of Clarenville consider the importance and use of public spaces in its planning?

I wrote about an impressive example of public space I recently saw in Zadar, Croatia on my blog.  They don't all need to be this fancy!

We are in a Very Different Spot - Finance Minister Wiseman on Budget 2015

Finance Minister Wiseman summed up the Province's 2015 Budget reality succinctly: “We are in a very different spot”.  In a period in which oil is less than half the value than it was a year earlier, “different spot” is may be a bit of an understatement.  Things have changed a lot in a year and the minister and the government is facing some serious challenges.  Minister Wiseman talk to the Clarenville Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening focused exclusively on how and why the government is planning to deal with the downturn – while trying to have a minimal impact on the economy.   In his address he covered the following topics – each of which spoke to the basic principles government has looked at in its crafting the budget: ·                   A Culture of Cost Management     A Refocus our Health System           A Refocus of the College of the North At...

The Clarenville Region Extended Seniors' Transportation (CREST) is a Clarenville based pilot project under the Age-Friendly Newfoundland and Labrador Transportation initiative. The CREST bus service will operate within Clarenville and travel as far as North West Brook, Harcourt and Elliott's Cove on a shared-ride door-to-door basis.
